Springfield, Massachusetts (July 1, 2021) – As of July 1, 2021, Wellfleet Student members whose plan includes Wellfleet Rx are eligible to receive FreeStyle Libre Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) products for a $0 copay after obtaining a prior authorization.
According to the CDC, roughly 34.1 million Americans 18 years or older have diabetes, with around 5 percent of college students having type 1 diabetes. When left untreated, diabetes can lead to serious conditions and medical complications, such as blindness, damaged blood vessels, heart disease, nerve damage, and strokes.
The addition of FreeStyle Libre CGM is a move that aligns with Wellfleet’s core tenet of improving access and eliminating cost as barriers to obtaining medications and medical devices that treat the clinical needs of the student population.
The FreeStyle Libre system consists of an easy-to-use reader and sensor kit. The reader scans a sensor that is placed on the back of the upper arm from about one and a half inches and instantly tells the user what their glucose levels are at any time.
Further, the user can get additional insights, through FreeStyle Libre’s Mobile App. The app charts their glucose levels with trend data to help with condition management. It also provides the ability to share results with others, such as doctors or parents, as well as the ability to receive alerts at times of low or high glucose levels.
“Glucose monitoring is such an important part of diabetes management,” said Jennifer Stevens, Director of Clinical Programs at Wellfleet. “By offering FreeStyle Libre CGM to the student population at no cost, we’re helping to simplify the testing process, while improving a student’s ability to manage their diabetes, with no more finger sticks.”
Research shows there is an increase in overall wellbeing, treatment satisfaction, and confidence in managing hypoglycemic episodes with CGMs, like FreeStyle Libre. Student members with type 1 diabetes should talk with their provider about the benefits of using FreeStyle Libre CGM.
“Students lead busy lives and are often on the go – whether getting from one class to the next, or to work, practice or study sessions. Adding FreeStyle Libre to our zero-dollar drug list helps take away pain and worry associated with checking their blood sugar. Plus, it helps students stay healthy and ready to learn,” said Stevens.
